The American Psychiatric Association and the District Branches, including the Arkansas Psychiatric Society, have a dual membership requirement General Members and Resident-Fellow Members for members in the United States and Canada. General Members and Resident-Fellow Members must join both organizations.
The rumor that you have to pay back years of dues in order to rejoin the APS & APA is inaccurate. If it has been less than a year since your membership lapsed, you just need to pay the current year's dues to reinstate you membership. If you know a colleague who has let their membership lapse, please reach out and encourage them to rejoin. The APS is a stronger voice in Arkansas for our patients and profession when we have more voices speaking and representing with us.
For those whose membership lapsed more than a year ago, complete a new membership application by going to www.psychiatry.org/join-apa/. To expedite the process, you may request a pre-populated application with your current information on file from the Membership Services Department at (888) 357-7924. There are easy payment plan options as well.
"The advantage of being a member of the Arkansas Psychiatric Society as the [USAM] Residency Director... is that I am able to stay abreast of national concerns and issues that affect psychiatry. This allows me to communicate these efforts to the residents and fellows as well as impart to them the importance of being proactively involved in local and national forums that support the efforts of psychiatrists and their patients."
--Ben Guise, MD, APS President 2003-2004, APA Distinguished fellow
